My Silent Journey begins,

Thoughts and memories from my insight meditation so far

ScannedImage

scanned card🙂

I like to be truthful and write from my heart  few words that many years already i was considering how i am going to express them, how meaningful my words will be and so on. I realised (again!) that there should not be any- more waiting, habitual anyway..

..so here what my mind recalls:

ALL BEGINGS WITH ANA-PANA MEDITATION @Lamphun, Thailand 03/2011

Is pointless to waste your time deciding  when you should find time to plant a tree… if that is the case no one will taste a single fruit, and especially we!

Same-same  is with the silent thing, get to know your only real friend ( and enemy ) that you have in your life is a great experience, and that is our own self. So, don’t wait so long finding the right moment! Right moment is always here, too close to us. I will assure you, you will get along together!

I like to share to whom it concern the most beautiful and amazing time that i had ever offered to my self, and the reasons why i assume it might be good for you too! I am pretty sure that you guess already what it is and yes is called Vipassana or Insight Meditation:)

Practice a particular technique, following a teaching  will not take you far if you don’t learn it well, dedicate some time and dig into it, feel it and love it. Thats my view. Although i believe that nothing is lost from what you have learned and did on the purpose of being a better person, a free person. All the data of your spiritual seeking are well storage, in a invisible divine bank:)

walking medi

In this Vipassana technique,  walking meditation is included🙂

The Vipassana, meditation had show me the string that holds the key ( attention, breath ) between different practices and desires for personal development such yoga, meditation, offering of my time, collaboration with communities and people who shares the same path and are seekers.

After the 10 days course and during the practice the clarity of my mind was so vivid, i could observe the slightest thought arising and falling like a pebble slowly falling into a deep well, and yes..that was my desire; my thought; and it was diving down or back to where it came from… The freedom that you feel while you coming out of your mind ( you the observer!) is incredible..You becoming a master of your self and not the opposite.

Ending of the first 10 days course in Lamphun, Thailand

There is so much talking already on the net about the no-talking during a Vipassana practice. Its true, there is no talking! But that does not mean that you can’t ask for what you need or discuss with the teacher a problem that you might have during your course, so don’t panic that you cant do a silent retreat because you wont verbalise your thoughts!

There are many meditation centers around the world that you can apply and i am happy to share with you more info that i gain from my 5 years experience into silent retreats, if you need so.

AND CONTINUES NEXT YEAR 12′ WITH INDIA AND THAILAND FOR A 21 DAYS COURSE

If you had experienced the sweet taste of being present and fulfilled with what you had and have at this moment with no expectations at all, then there is no doubt that you will search for this flavor again, and probably for even more…So,  Life took me back to same soils near Chiang Mai, a place with a unique monastery of Northern Thailand, Wat Chom Tong to attend a 3 weeks Vipassana course under the prayers and the protection of  Ven. Ajaan Tong Sirimangalo and of course of all the good-hearted people that you find in such journeys.

484350_10150829404162477_995491390_n

They are as i said loads of informations on the web regards the practice its self and the personal experiences of some people, for my self i decided to keep “little” noble silence and don’t say things which are not necessary. In the area of the monastery you will feel very comfortable and you can  take walks around the lake, visit certain places of the Wat and walk in your brake just outside of the monastery to buy what you need. The energy is so pure and you can feel the power of the prayers. Food is Amazing & with variety, and all the people are very friendly and dedicated to the Dhamma. In the course you will spend many hours with your self (21 days, almost all-day) so its better to start liking the idea of a solitude!

Naming your own demons and being able to keep up with this process in daily life can unfold your inner self and create a space between what arises with-in, and the re-action of you (which is always there), and through that repetitive acknowledging pattern of naming you become a more conscious being. With more awareness, more freedom, more liberation from suffering and drama stories. The results are more and the space that you gain is so healing and so important for wisely growing/knowing The self.

In Wat Chom Tong you will find an international office that is guiding people from abroad that seeking and want to practice i little deeper. For serious inquiries contact directly here: the good man and my teacher, thanat_chindaporn@yahoo.com

THE GATE TO THE NORTH, 09/2014 ONTARIO CANADA

As you leaving your foot prints on the snow, you come to realise that also thoughts and patterns that you make they stay in the environment relatively long..some actions longer, some actions less. Practising mindfulness can support your ability to feel and “see” through and understand the nature of mind. Towards my silent journey i have met one of the larger and nicer vipassana centers in North America, Canada.

Only 2 hours from Toronto city, and if you are lucky you can see in the night i glimpse of the Northern lights! Especially for those the like clean and tide areas, good teachers, supportive community, and forests..this is definitely you place, visit either to do a course or to volunteer ( for volunteer you need to do a 10 days course first ).

NEXT? ORGANISING AND HOSTING VIPASSANA RETREATS IN GREECE 2015-2016

NEOCHORI CHURCH

Church next to our locations with Great view..

Fortunate enough to have meet Basu and Martin we have decided to held silent retreats in Greece. With Basu we are having Kriya courses as well and this year May 07-17/2015 we are having a silent yoga retreat in Lefkada, island. With Vipassana we started last year and i am sure that we have received i loads of merits from the Monks of Thailand and as well from Israel where there is a center there.

People from all over of Europe now coming to feel the serenity of the mountain, to take walks in nature just in Spring time, and while are practising a full 14 days course the magic unfolds. Sounds that never heard before are now more clear, ones aggression slowly dissolves similar like the foot print on the snow..

neochorion.JPG

Once you can see clearly inside, you don’t need the view so much!

Compassion feels like a new baby in life, rejuvenates you and gives you courage and wisdom to continue on, because no matter how many courses or how good things you do in your life, the truth is that you should continue to keep up with what is next, because everything changes at all times, everything moves and never is the same..

In the house and with our philosophy we know that quiet well, so we are working with circumstances and we are trying to take-are nature with respect, trying to maintain peace in several areas, kitchen, cook with wisdom, main hall, outside areas of the houses, village and nature in general.

So, after all we are holding our second year fourteen days long course and we are happy to do it! we are purifying our selfs with the guidance of a  Friend & Teacher Martin Pack and the support of the Higher Teaching of Vipassana. Give it a try, anywhere in the world, 10 days or 14 days or 21 days..whatever suits you! Just don’t quit!  If you like to read a superb story of a friend and participant last year here in Greece see Lauras blog :)

The practice can be tough, meditating for many hours in the day can strangle you i bit. What is there though to support you is the benefits of the practise and believe me are there for everyone and especially for those who are ready to let go, i should learn to let go:)

And because the recipe it does work! ..we managed to keep Martin up late ( and most of the others !) and in his arrival day we have a free Tea- Talk in order to speak to those they want to learn i little more about the insight meditation, the event takes place in Athens the 22/4/16. see image for details🙂

final vvvvvipa

For any informations you might need in more detail about the practice, if you like to volunteer or practice or get in contact with some connections i may have made during my journey so far, please contact me and i will be happy to stay in touch with you, my personal email is antonis@foodpath.gr.

Hope we see you somewhere, and hopefully you get silent for a while..then you can talk for the rest of your life ! :)

10 Days silent yoga meditation retreat

10 Days silent yoga meditation retreat

Kriya yoga with Basu on the greek island Lefkada

From 7th to 17rd of May 2016

3-1024x678

This silent yoga meditation retreat is taking place in a mountain village in Lefkada island in Greece

Why learn Kriya Yoga?  By practising Kriya Yoga the mind returns to harmony, in the same way as Hatha Yoga (asanas) brings the body in harmony.

Why Silent retreat? The purpose of Kriya Yoga is to develop inner silence, speaking little for 10 days will benefit this development a lot.

Kriya Yoga On the path of yoga. Kriya Yoga belongs to the inner level of yoga ‘meditation’ and was first described by Patanjali in his “Yoga Sutras” 400 BC. The practice is based on the breath, the attention and the 7 chakras.

Through the practice of Kriya Yoga the human evolution is enhanced and Samadhi can be attained. The secret in Kriya Yoga is the subtle connection between the breath and consciousness.

Kriya Yoga was made famous in the west by Paramahansa Yogananda. He wrote the book “Autobiography of a Yogi” which became a ‘most read’ for all who are interested in yoga

In this retreat the initial level of Kriya Yoga practice will be given. If this practice is successful and the wish is there it will be possible on a later stage to take an initiation in the full practise. The course contains of a structured practice of Kriya Yoga and to support the meditation the will time for Kriya Hatha Yoga and Nidra Yoga.

Kriya Hatha Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that is using the fundamentals from Kriya Yoga. The main emphasis is on the breath, the 7 chakras  and self observation. In Nidra Yoga we enter deep relaxation by rotating our awareness through the body.

Basu began his yoga sadhana in 1997 and in 2002 he was initiated in Kriya Yoga by Swami Shankarananda Giri.

DSCN2651Basu Padmasana

He is an experienced teacher and has been giving courses and retreats in yoga and meditation in India, Thailand, Greece and Austria since 2000.

In 2008 Swami Shankarananda Giri gave him the allowance to introduce and guide others into Kriya Yoga.

What is Vipassana?

Vipassana means to see clearly / beyond, to see the true nature of things as they really are. Our practice is based on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, training the mind to be aware of the present moment at all times, allowing us to overcome everyday difficulties we find in our daily life.

Minimum car traffic, peacefull life, present moment

Vipassana meditation technique
The technique is being taught by teachers from Wat Chomtong. The technique is from the Mahasi Sayadaw tradition and has been developed by Ajarn Tong, the Abbott of Wat Chomtong near Chiang Mai. It is a practical technique enabling you to practice after the retreat and incorporate mindfulness in your daily life. The practice consists of walking and sitting meditation. The course will take you through different stages of knowledge within the practice. The ‘beginners’ course is 14 days. If you have already done a ‘basic course’, follow up retreats are 10 days only. Although in this course we will accept participants with minimum stay 3 days up to 5.

Benefits of the practice
Overcoming many personal, mental and physical difficulties, like relationships, work-related stress, letting go of attachments etc. Constant practice develops insight allowing confidence, energy and effort, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom to arise, in order to help ourselves and others overcome difficulties enabling us to have more compassion for ourselves and others.

Martin Pack martinhas been meditating for more than 30 years. 14 years ago he came across this particular form of Vipassana meditation and it was a life changing experience. He subsequently spent years practicing in Northern Thailand often going straight from one retreat into another. Soon he was asked to assist in leading retreats by revered teacher Thanat in Chom Thong  in Thailand and Phra Ofer in Israel under the authority of the venerable Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo coming from the Mahasi lineage. In 2008 Martin was asked by his teacher to set up a Vipassana meditation centre in the mountainous region of Pai. His years of experience in leading retreats show especially during the ‘report times’ (private daily talks between the teacher and the retreat participants) where he helps the students through their challenges with his compassion, characteristic humour and deep understanding of the processes they are going through. During the last years Martin has also organised and taught retreats in Northern Italy, England, Wales, Israel, France and Austria.

Words from experience! post written from Laura

Learning Mindfulness In Greece

One day, when I was browsing through the Facebook feed, a notification from an old friend of mine popped up.

Antonio invited me to a meditation retreat in Greece. Yay for Greece! Yay for meditation! The little pop up engaged my attention for the next couple of hours as I researched a practice called Vipassana, which I’ve never heard of before.

Regular meditation was never my strongest side.
I’ve tired it, yes, but sitting still and clearing my mind for an hour was too difficult.

Do you know what I'm talking about? ;) Source: Internet
Do you know what I’m talking about? Source: Internet

Observing my thoughts? Letting them wash over me? Still too extreme. Unable to meditate by a handbook, I was very happy when I read that sleep was also a form of meditation. Excited by this new piece of knowledge, I devoted myself to sleep. That is, to meditation. After all, any excuse for sleeping is good.

I enjoyed my sleeping sessions but I did felt a hunger for more. I wanted the benefits that I’ve heard meditation can bestow on you.

Maybe it's gonna turn me into a cat? Or give cat senses? Haha. None of that happened. I just reall wanted to put the photo of these chilled cats here. Photo: Martin Pack (I think...)

When I saw Antonio’s invitation to the retreat, I knew I was ready.
I clicked on the link and read the description:

  • Vipassana lets you see the state of things as they really are.
  • Vipassana allows you to observe your emotions.
  • Vipassana is the training of the mind to be aware of the present moment.
  • Vipassana allows overcoming difficulties that we find in our daily life.

All right, all right. Sounds good.

I wrote to Antonio so quickly that the fire under my fingers nearly melted my keyboard. Yes, there’s still space. I’m coming. I don’t know how because I’m skint. But I’m coming.

Antonio was organising the retreat in the island of Lefkada, which has some of the most breathtaking beaches I’ve seen. Another bonus of the retreat. When April arrived, I packed my backpack, kissed my goldfish goodbye and went off to Greece.

It really is easier to meditate when you're surrounded by views like these... Now I wanna go to Greece!

Antonio set me up in his lovely guesthouse in Paleros, just opposite Lefkada.

When D-day arrived, my friend stuffed me in an already overpacked car, put his mum’s aromatic pumpkin pie on my lap (he knows the dangers of leaving me in control of good food…) and we set out for the village of Neohori.

The trip up the mountains was jolly.
The lunch we shared with all the retreat participants was jolly. Savouring Greek food was jolly. And then came the noble silence.

The village was hours. Not like it made a difference as we were a quiet bunch of people ;)
The village was ours. Not like it made a difference as we were a quiet bunch of people😉

The noble what?

That wasn’t in the retreat description…

Or was it?

The seminar I joined was a silent retreat. Fourteen days long.

There’s logic behind the silence, though. The point of not talking is that you’re eliminating distractions. You’re putting a lot of effort in this practice and conversations re-direct energy. Your mind is already busy and the less food for thought, the better.

Even a smile can be hard to get over.

Learning Vipassana, you really get a chance to go deep inside yourself. Some of the things you’ll see are funny, some are sad and some are scary. We’re complicated creatures with a limited understanding of the world that we live in.

We were very fortunate with the Neohori's location. I'd take part in another retreat just to enjoy to beauty & energy of the place! Antonio, did you read that? ;) Photo: Martin Pack

“I probably wouldn’t be alive today if I didn’t learn that the world is actually interesting when you look at it closely,” as my friend, Shooting Star, put it recently. Vipassana gives a chance to look closely.

We’re all struggling.
That is a fact of life. Sometimes overcoming our pettiness is the hardest thing to do. So much easier to stay small and weak and angry. So much easier to let our Ego be the driver.

Learning to recognise the moment in which we become trapped by the power of our Ego, helps us snap out of it. Being more mindful and aware can guide us through the darkest hours.

Wow. I went really Vipassana on you there. But it is what it is. Everything changes. Rising, falling. One moment you’re happy, another moment you’re sad. One moment you’re angry, another moment you’re blissful. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: things are not going to stay the same.

Being able to withstand a shitstorm? Not such a bad idea…

Now, let’s go back to the silence.
When I realised that we’re really not supposed to talk for the next two weeks, I just shrugged my shoulders, No problem. I’m more of a thinker anyway, right? When I found out that I also wasn’t supposed to read, write or listen to music, I still didn’t care much. After all, it was only two weeks.

But then I got to live the silence and ten days later, I learned something new about myself: I liked to talk.

Still, I had to remain silent…
The good thing was that there were things that made the practice sweeter. First of all, Neohori’s location is perfect for letting your guard down. The surroundings are so beautiful that being there was a blessing every single day.

Second of all: the food. Yeah, I know… But the food was amazing! Pure, fresh, seasoned with love. True feast for our taste buds. The duo that was in charge of cooking, Adonis and Daphnie, enjoyed this side of the retreat so much that they actually decided to start FoodPath, a catering companythat offers organic food.

Who doesn't love food? I'm such a pig... Oh, my. That's actually offensive to pigs. Let's try again: I'm such a Laura! Photo: Antonio Raptis

There was one more reason for this retreat nailing it: the meditation teacher.

I was worried that I’m gonna meet some weird, aloof, spiritual whatever but instead I met Martin Pack. His wisdom, knowledge and the kind of humor that is actually funny, really supported our learning curve. If you ever venture into the walking-sitting meditation, I sincerely wish you a guide as good as Martin.

I know you might be curious about what transpired during the fortnight of silence. To learn this, I guess you’re just gonna have to go through the retreat yourself. Or PM me. You can also do that.

On the 15th day of the retreat, the noble silence was lifted.

We could interact as “normal” human beings once again.

It is very strange to meet people through silence. I had the impression that I knew my comrades so well but the truth was that I didn’t know them at all. It was time to discover each other from scratch.

We had time for this, as we didn’t jump straight back into the real world (which might have ended in the meantime, by the way). For a couple of days, we were just travelling around Lefkada, eating amazing food, enjoying turquoise beaches, bright sun and conversations.

It was good, it was sweet.

It was very Vipassana.

Kriya yoga and Tantra meditation in Paleros, in Antonios guest house in September

Kriya Yoga course in Paleros
25/09/15- 03/10/15

The course is a structured practice of Kriya Yoga combined with Hatha Yoga and Nidra Yoga. The practice can instantly be integrated in daily life.
The Kriya Yoga technique is described in Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutras”. The foundation is the breath and the 7 chakras. Kriya Yoga is an instrument through which the human evolution can be enhanced through the breath. The secret about consciousness is that it is intimately related to the breath.
In this weekly course we will approach the first practice in Kriya Yoga. If this practice is successful and the wish is there, it will be possible later to take an initiation in the full practice.
